Leading Entrepreneur


Inspired by her father, Dr. Stya Paul, Founder Chairman of the Apeejay Stya Group, Mrs. Berlia took to business and industry in 1989. She is a leading woman entrepreneur and President of the Apeejay Stya Group & Svrán Group – an international conglomerate of businesses with activities in Pharmaceuticals & Chemicals, Real Estate and Development, International Trading & Distribution, Financial Investments & Services, and several emerging businesses such as Information Technology, Publishing & Media.

Mrs. Berlia was the President of the PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry [PHDCCI] in its 101st year (PHDCCI is a multi-state Apex Chamber of Commerce in Northern India covering 10 states and 1 Union Territory, comprising 44% of the geographical area of India). On taking over the reins of the PHDCCI as President in Dec 2005, she became the first-ever lady in history to head a leading multi-state Apex Chamber of Commerce in India. She is also the first Lady Member of the Managing Committee of the PHDCCI.

Contribution to Pharma Industry

Mrs. Berlia plays a leading role in the Indian Pharmaceutical Industry and has been actively involved in taking up various important issues like drug norms & price regulations etc. She has a special focus in the area of Life Science, Information technology, distribution & logistics and education (Life Science being one of the core businesses of the Apeejay Stya Group, with collaborations with several International Pharma Companies). Under her stewardship, the Group has developed a unique one-window national distribution pharmaceutical network of global standards. The strong national network of sales and marketing is supported by three formulation manufacturing plants. ASG Biochem in Kolkata, another state-of-the-art ISO 9001:2000 & ISO 14001 certified plant of the Group, was acquired from Akzo Nobel. ASG Biochem is currently one of the largest manufacturers in Asia, specializing in the manufacture of steroidal and non-steroidal bulk drugs synthetic sequences. The Group has also initiated stringent quality control techniques, including a 'Research and Development Centre' engaged in process development and new drug delivery systems.

Mrs. Berlia is a nominated member of ICC's Biotechnology Committee on India and was nominated to represent India at the 'Commission of Biotech Society' by International Chamber of Commerce. She was also nominated to represent companies affiliated to the ‘Organization of Pharmaceutical Producers of India’ [OPPI] in the IFPMA [International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association] Internet Task Force and has also attended a symposium in Geneva in October 2000 in that capacity.  

Mrs. Berlia presented the business perspective of “The impact & challenges of the Global Economic crisis on Investment & Employment in India/South Asia” organized by DFID & IFC in London in July 2009. 

Contributions to Education

As President of the Apeejay Education Society (which runs 13 Schools and 16 institutions of Higher Learning in India with more than 32,000 students on their rolls), she has made outstanding contribution in ensuring that the Apeejay vision of 'Quality education of global standards leading to man-making and nation-building' is effectively reflected in the conceptualization and standardization of the academic programs and curricula across all its institutions. She has strived to ensure that all Apeejay institutions actively incorporate value-based holistic education at all levels based on composite Indian culture and ethos for a responsive and responsible citizenship, and adopt inclusiveness through scholarships and special provisions for the differently-abled, to help absorb them into the mainstream.

She has been instrumental in the promotion and deployment of several technological initiatives in the Apeejay Institutions, such as the setting up of campus-wide networks, broadband internet facilities through satellite and radio, implementation of centralized Enterprise Resource Planning [ERP] solutions in School and College for TQM in education, effective integration of technology in classroom teaching-learning transactions, etc. Due to her initiative, the Apeejay institutions were among the first in the country to effectively implement ICT in the curriculum starting in the early 1990s itself, as also to introduce educational ERPs for effective administration, learning and collaboration.

She is the Chairperson of the Apeejay Stya Education Research Foundation (ASERF) which functions as a “Think Tank” for sharing of ideas and experiences on the issues, concerns and priorities of Indian education. The ASERF also promotes and coordinates research, review and analysis in education for Quality and to support policy formulation, in addition to being a repository of knowledge.

Mrs. Berlia is Founder President and Past-President of the Education Promotion Society of India [EPSI] – a catalyst nodal agency for promoting education in India and abroad. Under her stewardship, with the involvement of eminent industrialists, industry representatives and other stakeholders, several key action plans were presented at different forums of policy making, some of which have been taken up for serious discussion for implementation.

Contribution to Women's Education and Empowerment

Mrs. Berlia is a leading crusader for women’s education through her active role in the development and running of the Apeejay higher institutions devoted primarily to women's education, namely the Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar, Apeejay Saraswati PG College for Girls, Charkhi Dadri and Apeejay Institute of Design, New Delhi. All the three institutes offer a wide range of higher education and vocational courses to help young women of the region become self-reliant and contribute to the nation's development. For over two decades, Mrs. Berlia has, at various national and international forums, actively championed the cause of education of the girl child (especially in rural and semi-urban India), gender equality in access to opportunities & employment, and women's empowerment in the family and industry. In 1995, she had represented India at the UN World Social Summit held at Copenhagen (Denmark) at the invitation of the International Chamber of Commerce and International Organization of Employers, and had delivered a keynote address on the 'Role of Women at the Work Place'.

Contribution to Higher Education

Mrs. Berlia has been guiding the Apeejay higher institutions in developing Corporate Training programs, Management Development Programs, Industrial Consultancy & Research etc. She has also encouraged the Apeejay higher institutions to utilize the expertise and experience of their Senior Academicians in conducting Professional Programs for teachers of other institutions from all over the country. As Co-Founder & Chancellor of the Apeejay Stya University, (India's first Industry-centric technology and Liberal Arts University with a strong focus on research and innovation) she has been instrumental in ensuring that the University has a strong research focus and effective knowledge-sharing across all programmes and disciplines (including exploratory research, research in emerging technologies and collaborative research with industry) that is aligned to the vision and mission of the University and emerging trends in the global market.

Mrs. Berlia has been at the forefront of pursuing reforms in higher, technical and professional education in the country. She plays a leading role in the formation of policy ideas and analysis of government reform, and her suggestions on inclusive education, industry-academia linkages and implement able solutions for funding of higher education have been well-appreciated by the government and the regulatory bodies.

As Founder Chairperson of the Higher Education Committee of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry [FICCI], Mrs. Berlia was instrumental in initiating and organizing the first Global conference on education titled “The Higher Education Summit – Roadmap for the future” organized in collaboration with the UGC & FICCI in Dec 2004, at which President Hennessy of Stanford University was the keynote speaker. She also played a pivotal role in organizing the "All India Conference on Privatization & Globalisation of Education"

in Delhi in the year 2000 attended by eminent educationists from all over the country. She is currently the Honorary Advisor of the FICCI Higher Education Committee, mentoring in its various Educational activities and policy formulation & recommendations. She was also the Co-Chairperson of the CII National Committee on Higher Education. Mrs. Berlia has published numerous papers on higher education reforms and has taken up the issues of access, equity, quality and innovation at various education forums, both in India and abroad. Mrs. Berlia was a nominated member on the Joint University Grants Commission - PHDCCI Group on University - Industry Co-operation and has been a member on the ‘Delhi Government Working Group on Technical Education’ for the formulation of the 10th Five-Year Plan [2002-2007].

As Former Chairperson, Board of Governors of the prestigious Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jalandhar (one of the only 18 NIT’s in the country having Deemed University status and directly under the Union Ministry of HRD), Mrs. Berlia has been instrumental in guiding the institute to attain international standards in Academics & Research through several International Research projects & publications in international journals apart from overall progress in other spheres.

Mrs. Sushma Paul Berlia was nominated as the Board Member of the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) to develop a quality conscious system of Technical Education where excellence, relevance to market needs and participation by all stakeholders are prime determinants. She is also the Chairperson of the NBA committee constituted for the development of accreditation documents for Management Programmes.

She was the part of the official India delegation for the US-India Higher Education Summit to Washington (Oct, 2011) for intense and meaningful collaboration among academia, the private sector, and government on both sides, to facilitate greater partnership and collaboration in US-India Higher Education environment, with joint participation of Educationists, entrepreneurs, Industry and Government. She has also participated as a distinguished speaker in the BOAO Forum For Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2013, China.

Contribution to Vocational Education & Skill Development Under Mrs. Berlia’s stewardship, the Apeejay higher institutions have undertaken several philanthropic initiatives such as programmes for imparting life-skills to school dropouts, professional training to homemakers and rural-folk in entrepreneurship & vocational skills, and adoption of remote schools in backward areas.

She is the member of the MHRD-AICTE committee constituted for the Implementation of the scheme for setting up of New Polytechnic under PPP Mode where MHRD through has envisaged a scheme for establishment of 300 new polytechnic under PPP mode under the skill development initiative of Govt. of India. She was also the Chairperson of the PHDCCI constituted “Task Force on Skill Development” in northern states (in areas of higher education, technical/professional education and vocational education formal & informal) comprising eminent educationists, experts from academia and industry, and Central and State govt. representatives.

One of the major achievements of the Task Force has been to come up with specific actionable recommendations for a minimum-agreed program (supported by Academia & Industry). The recommendations, with special focus on skill development, were first presented at the ‘Conference of State Secretaries on Skill Development’, and then at a Chief Secretaries Conclave, with the objective of preparing an Action Plan for State-wise Skill-Development in the 11th Five-Year Plan period and ‘Public-Private Partnership’ (PPP) Initiatives for skill development (especially for the upgradation of ITIs and Modular Employable training Skills).

The Common Action Plan (covering standard training module for trainers, common syllabus for various trades, compulsory internship of trainers, adoption of common norms of certification) finalized during the Conclave is now being followed up at the state-level on one-to-one basis to carry forward its implementation.

Mrs. Berlia was also member of the ‘Apex Committee for Skill Development Initiative’, constituted by the Director General of Employment & Training, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India.

She has also taken initiative in establishing Community College and in this regard met the members of the US Community Colleges as part of the delegation with Senator Mark Warner for exploring possible collaborations with Community Colleges for Skill Development, and also visited Montgomery Community College, Washington in the month of October 2011.

Mrs. Berlia is also the National Board Member of the Ministry of Small, Micro, Small & Medium Enterprise, Govt. of India constituted to examine the factors affecting the promotion and development of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises and review the policies & programmes of the Central Govt. in regards to facilitating the promotion & development & enhancing the competitiveness of such enterprises and the impact thereof on such enterprises. Further to make recommendations on matters referred to it by the Central Govt. which, in the opinion of that Govt., is necessary or expedient for facilitating the promotion and development and enhancing the competitiveness of the micro, small and medium enterprises. It also advices the Central Government on the use of the Fund.

Social Justice, Upliftment and Equality

While succeeding in doing her part in social upliftment through her various businesses, she has also favoured direct interventions and setting up charities, including in: free food distribution to poor, rehabilitation, & education of the physically challenged, media/film campaigns to remove prejudices related to people with disabilities and promoting their inclusiveness. She has worked with and provided support to a range of non-profit programs including: Tribal Welfare Fund, Rotary Viklang Kendra & Blood Bank, Rotary Foundation, UNICEF, UNESCO, World Food Fund, PM relief fund, ISKCON, Ramakrishna Mission, National Trust, AAFT, Tony Blair Foundation, National Institute of Hearing Handicapped, UN Information Centre, British Council, Jaipur Foot. She has a special commitment to the protection of the environment, and has been at the forefront of various programmes, campaigns and sustainable research initiatives.

Preservation and Promotion of India’s Culture and Heritage

Throughout her life she has done her part in helping to keep our culture and traditions alive (Saura painting, Pattachitra, Punjabi Phulkari, Jugni and Zardosi, to name a few) while also promoting new cultural ideas, concepts and upcoming artistes by organizing plays, dances, films and skits that concentrate on human values and Indian culture. The Apeejay College of Fine Arts, a UGC recognized Centre for Excellence, is specialized to preserve and teach our cultural heritage to a new generation of students. All Apeejay institutions regularly organize major cultural events, and also send students across the world to promote Indian culture through exchanges and exhibitions. She has worked closely with national and international bodies to help keep alive many less-known traditional and ethnic forms of art, design, sculpture, languages and music of our country.

  • Honoured by the Punjab Technical University (PTU) in September 2005 with a special Citation “in recognition of her contributions in the field of Biotechnology, Life Sciences, Drug Manufacturing and research, and relentless pursuit for promoting education at all levels".

  • Recipient of Stanford Associates award of Merit from Stanford University, California, USA, 2005, and is a member of Parent Advisory Board of Stanford University, California, USA.

  • Mrs. Berlia was awarded the PHD Chamber Outstanding Businesswomen Award 2008 at the PHD Chamber Annual Awards for Excellence 2008 for her achievements as a leading woman entrepreneur and industrialist. The selection was made by a Jury of eight distinguished member of society chaired by Justice R.C. Lahoti, Former Chief Justice of India.

  • Conferred the ‘International Lifetime Achievement Award by the “International Congress of Women 2009 in Collaboration with the Govt. of India and the UN Information Centre for India and Bhutan.

  • Received the ‘Exemplary Leader Award’ at Singapore for her outstanding contribution to industry & academia in Asia by Employer Branding Institute, World HRD Congress & Stars of the Industry Group with CMO Asia as the strategic partner – endorsed by the Asian Confederation of Businesses. The other prominent organisations who were present for the award ceremony were Dow Chemical, Samsung, Tata Consultancy Services, Malaysian Airlines, Mother Dairy, City Bank, etc. This award is an addition to the numerous prestigious awards and accolades received by Mrs. Sushma Berlia for her outstanding contribution to industry, academia & society over the years.

  • In a first of its kind initiative in London, Skill Tree Knowledge Consortium, India’s first syndicate of private universities and colleges, profiled few of India’s top educational institutions. The aim was to position Indian colleges and universities as proven leaders on a global platform.

  • As part of the initiative, Mrs. Berlia, was recognised and awarded for her contribution to Indian education through Apeejay Education Society & Apeejay Stya University in a glittering event at the House of Commons, London, held in June, 2014.

  • Felicitated by CII at the 5th University-Industry Congress: Higher Education Summit 2nd December, 2015 for being Global Outstanding Leader in the field of Higher Education and Industry.

Rotarian

Mrs. Berlia is an active member of the Rotary Club of Delhi Midtown. She has been the Director of the Programme Committee, Education Foundation Committee & Interact committee taking keen interest in the activities of the Rotary Club’s welfare programmes for the under privileged and handicapped members of the Society.

Education and other interests

After completing her schooling at the Convent of Jesus and Mary, Shimla & Delhi, and graduation from Lady Sri Ram College with Economic Honours, she studied for her Master’s in Business Economics from the University of Delhi in 1979.

Mrs. Berlia has a deep interest in philosophy, religion, music & reading. She is an active member of the Rotary Club of Delhi Midtown. As Director of its Programme Committee, Education Foundation Committee & Interact Committee, she is actively involved in the Club’s welfare programmes for the handicapped and under-privileged members of society.
