Prof. A.K. Sharma
Former Director, NCERT
Former Director, National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT). Also headed various academic and administrative posts in NCERT from 1974 - 1999 June. Prof. Sharma’s initial career was with the Punjab University, Chandigarh which, he served for thirteen year as Lecturer and Reader in Department of Chemistry. During his tenure with the University, he had the onerous responsibility of executing some major curriculum development project in chemistry from the school up to the University stage. He has several publications on various aspect of chemistry to his credit.

In the field of education, Prof. Sharma has contributed extensively various aspects of Science Education, Teacher Education and Distance Education as an Educational Consultant to several national and international organizations – UNESCO, International Association of Education Evaluation (IAEE), Paris, World Bank, Commonwealth of Learning (COL), Educational Consultants India Ltd. (Ed.CIL).

Prof. Sharma Was instrumental in planning and organizing teacher developmental programmes employing distance education modality, in association with the DIETs. He is the Chairman; Curriculum Committees for the development of Teaching-Learning Materials for the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and Very recently he associated himself with a significant publication entitled “Vocational Education and Training – Initiative through Open and distance Learing”, an approach which has caught the attention of the Planning Commission, Govt. of India.

Prof. A.K. Sharma was a member of the Task Force on the formulation of the National Policy on Education, 1986 (NPE) and its Programme of Action (PoA). He was also a member of the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE).
